EYFS Primary Focus Areas

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

We achieve this through encouraging interaction among peers, interacting with teachers and learning how to express themselves in a variety of ways, your child is able to develop themselves socially and emotionally as well developing their own sense of self and a higher degree of confidence and self assurance. You are likely to notice your child becoming more decisive, increasingly comfortable with new people and able to better communicate with you and your family. This aspect of the curriculum is present in all activities. Coming to Nursery means there is a social aspect to everything your child is doing, from finger painting with the other children, to singing educational songs. Building confidence and social skills at an early age gives your child a huge advantage later in life.

Communication, Language and Literacy

Your child will be given plenty of encouragement and praise with an emphasis on linguistic acquisition and pronunciation. For young children, expressing themselves vocally can be tough initially particularly if second languages are present. We use fun activities and aim to create a comfortable, open atmosphere so that even the shyest children can feel able to speak up. Our large library of children’s books makes early literacy fun and varied. Daily story telling allows your child to learn new words and become familiar with linguistic patterns, while feeling entertained. Our teachers use the fun themes from our books to introduce your child to letter shapes and the relationship between written and spoken language. The intriguing nature of our children’s library will create a love of reading at an early age, sowing the seeds for advanced literacy.

At Toddler Town British Nursery we follow the Jolly Phonics Program, as it is suitable for both young learners and bilingual children. The program takes into consideration not only the (26) letters of the alphabet but embraces the (42) sounds used in the English Language assisting in the pronunciation and underlying understandings. The application used is fun through songs, stories and puppets and can be applied anywhere at anytime for instance, finding items in the sand play that begin with the sound ‘sssss’ for example a snake! Therefore even the younger children can participate in such academic activities!

Our music program (Jolly Music) also has language at its core. Didactic lyrics fused with actions and mime make singing and dancing an active educational experience. Even our youngest children are able to connect action and word, increasing their vocabulary and confidence in using new phrases. Your child will use these fun forms of learning to develop their literacy skills in the classroom. We encourage your child from early mark making to form written words for themselves.

Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy

Our large range of problem-solving toys enables young learners to establish patterns and make connections. Through shapes, colors, numbers and space, your child will develop reasoning skills at an early age. In addition to reasoning-play, structured activities will develop your child’s sense of achievement. Our teachers set fun tasks involving counting and matching to develop your child’s ability and intellect. In doing so, your child’s skills in numeracy will strengthen, allowing them to fully understand the practical application of numbers rather than the simple words and symbols. These early stages of problem solving, reasoning and numeracy will be vital in developing your child’s ability to think independently.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

For young children, the world we live in is a strange and magical place. Your child is experiencing new things every day and has a natural curiosity to learn all the wonderful things we adults no longer question. Our teacher’s talk about these topics in language your child can understand and relate to, encouraging this curiosity through experiences and trial and error at every stage. A significant part of this area of learning looks at social diversity. It is important that your child understands the cultural, social and ethnic differences that make up the society we live in, particularly in a city as diverse as Dubai. We aim to attract families from a wide variety of backgrounds in order to allow your child to mix with a representative social group: a child’s microcosm of our population. We encourage our children to consider the similarities and differences between themselves and their classmates. We create a friendly and open environment that, rather than breaking down ethnic barriers, prevents them being built. In addition to the social aspect of our world, we encourage our children to explore the natural world around them. Your child will investigate materials, looking at how things work, as well as patterns, similarities and differences of color, shape and size. Our exceptional water play area and sand pit allows even our youngest children to experience natural materials in a secure environment.

Physical Development

Your child will take part in music and movement based activities every day at nursery. We aim to develop the control your child has over their body, looking at both gross and fine motor skills, coordination and skill. Development of your child’s gross motor skills will involve activities such as fully supervised outdoor play (we have a large amount of outdoor play equipment including tricycles and rocking horses), ball games, dance and young aerobics. Fine motor skills are developed with activities such as drawing, painting, using beads; scissors and making shapes with play dough.

We follow a program called ‘Sticky Kids’ which is specific to early coordination, physical challenge, fine and gross motor skills and listening abilities.

Through these varied and enjoyable activities, your child will develop balance and coordination, as well as learning about the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle.

Creative Development

The creative development of our children impacts every other aspect of their learning and development. Their use of imagination and expression allows them to make connections between other learning areas and develop a sense of identity and self. At Toddler Town British Nursery, we endeavor to embrace and encourage creativity in your child through a large range of media. Through imagination and role-play activities, our children are able to make sense of the world around them, in their own individual ways. Children are encouraged to discuss their ideas and feelings and use artistic materials and dance to express themselves. We ensure our children feel that their views and insights are valued equally, allowing them to feel confident in their own ideas.
